Abstract

This research analyzes the evolution and impact of female leadership in executive production within the Spanish film sector during the period between 2019 and 2025.This study focuses on the quantitative analysis of feature film production management, differentiating between fiction and documentary formats. It also identifies leadership typologies, determining the number of films where a woman holds an executive production role or if this role is shared with a male executive producer. Using a quantitative methodology, we analyzed the Netflix catalog and compared it with the Spanish film rating records held by the ICAA (Spanish Institute of Cinematography and Audiovisual Arts). There is a higher density of leadership among female executive producers, male executive producers, and mid-level production positions in the Netflix catalog.

It is necessary to implement concrete measures linked to this platform to provide more women with opportunities for access and advancement, with the aim of narrowing the gap with men across the various categories and roles involved in audiovisual creation and production—and, in particular, at leadership levels.
