Knowledge, attitudes, and community practices regarding the prevention of addictive behaviors in adolescents

Community knowledge, attitudes, and practices are essential components in preventing addictive behaviors among adolescents, given the combined influence of family, school, social, and digital factors. The objective was to determine the level of community knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding the prevention of addictive behaviors in adolescents. A descriptive and analytical literature review was conducted, based on the community outreach project titled "Community-based care for the prevention and management of addictive behaviors among adolescents in the three urban parishes of Jipijapa Canton (2026)." The document pool consisted of 50 publications identified in Scopus, PubMed, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, and Google Scholar; applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, a sample of 30 articles published between 2022 and 2026 was selected. The results showed that knowledge regarding risks and consequences forms a preventive foundation, though it must be accompanied by risk perception and protective attitudes. Key practices included family supervision and communication, school-based interventions, community participation, support networks, and digital strategies. It was determined that prevention requires integrating knowledge, favorable attitudes, and sustained practices through shared responsibility among families, schools, and the community.
